Shirati KMT Hospital is located in north-western Tanzania, along the shores of Lake Victoria near the Kenyan border, in Rorya District, Mara Region.

Since 2010, Shirati KMT Hospital has maintained a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) / Service Agreement with the Rorya Council.

This agreement, formally signed by the Tanzania Mennonite Church (KMT) and the Rorya Council, designates Shirati KMT Hospital as the Council-Designated Hospital for Rorya District.

Our History

Shirati Hospital is among the oldest mission hospitals in Tanzania It was founded in 1934 by missionaries from Eastern Mennonite Mission (EMM) in the United States.

The first missionaries from Eastern Mennonite Mission were committed to providing education and healthcare services to communities in Rorya District. According to the 2022 Tanzania National Census, the district has a population of 354,490 people.

In 1972, major renovations and additional construction were undertaken to bring the hospital facilities up to modern standards. Throughout its history, Shirati Hospital, in partnership with the Mennonite Church, has remained committed to providing healthcare and medical treatment to people within the Shirati community and beyond the hospital’s catchment area.

Shirati is located in Rorya District along the shores of Lake Victoria at an elevation of approximately 1,200 metres above sea level.

Remote Clinics

The hospital also operates four remote clinics to further serve the needs of the region’s population. These clinics are located at Nyarero, Nyangoto, Burere and Nyamasanda.
